In order to combat gender based abuse, CAVWOC has trained community structures in Phalombe and the fruits of the efforts have been observed. Male champions are one of those community structures and have, since their training, put a stop to more than 5 child marriages in their area. They adamantly advise the students to concentrate on school and nothing else. Mr. Makiyi (above) is the leader of the Male champions’ group at Chisugulu community day secondary school and he personally made sure the girls were removed from their would be marital homes and are enrolled back into school. so far, there have been improved and safe learning environment for girls and boys in upper primary and secondary school in Malawi. 1150 girls and 650 boys have shown these changes. there have been improved capabilities/ competencies of girls and in boys to defend girls’ rights and challenge Sexual Gender Based Violence in 4 targeted districts in Malawi.
